Visit of the Construction Site of the New Ljubljana Railway Station

Representatives of the members of EGTC Future Paths took part in a professional visit to the construction site of the new Ljubljana Railway Station, one of the largest railway infrastructure projects currently underway in Slovenia.

During the visit, participants were introduced to the progress of the construction works, key technical solutions and the plans for developing a modern railway hub that will significantly improve traffic flow, safety, passenger experience and integration with other modes of transport.

The new Ljubljana Railway Station will become a key gateway to the Slovenian rail network and will play an important role in strengthening international rail connections. The visit was particularly valuable in the context of the development activities of EGTC Future Paths, whose primary objective is the revitalisation of the Ljubljana–Novo mesto–Karlovac–Zagreb railway corridor and the improvement of sustainable mobility and cross-border connectivity. Modernising the railway infrastructure along the entire corridor is one of the key prerequisites for establishing faster, more reliable and more competitive passenger and freight rail services.

An important milestone in the development of the Lower Carniola railway line is also the preparation of the project for the Ivančna Gorica–Ljubljana section. A Variant Study with a Pre-Investment Design has already been completed for this section. Following the issuance of the opinions by the competent spatial planning authorities, the project will proceed to the public consultation phase. This will represent a significant step towards selecting the most appropriate solution for the future development and increased capacity of the railway line. For the Novo mesto–Ivančna Gorica section, the preparation of the project brief, together with the investment cost estimate, is currently underway and will be followed by the preparation of the Variant Study with Pre-Investment Design (ŠV PIZ).

EGTC Future Paths welcomes the continued investment in railway infrastructure, as such projects provide an essential foundation for achieving the objectives of sustainable mobility, regional economic development and stronger territorial cohesion. We are convinced that coordinated investments on both the Slovenian and Croatian sections of the corridor will significantly contribute to re-establishing rail as the backbone of sustainable transport between Ljubljana, Novo mesto, Karlovac and Zagreb.
